How NPS works at retirement

  • You contribute every month until 60. Your money is invested in equity, corporate bonds and government securities.
  • At 60, you can withdraw up to 60% as a tax-free lump sum.
  • At least 40% must buy an annuity, which pays you a monthly pension for life.

Example: ₹5,000 a month from age 30 to 60 at 10% builds about ₹1.14 crore. You can take ₹68 lakh tax-free; ₹45.6 lakh in an annuity at 6% pays about ₹22,800 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Can I withdraw from NPS before 60?

Partial withdrawals of up to 25% of your own contributions are allowed after 3 years for specific needs such as children’s education, marriage, a house or illness.

What are NPS Tier 1 and Tier 2?

Tier 1 is the pension account with tax benefits and withdrawal limits. Tier 2 is an optional savings account you can withdraw from anytime, without the tax benefits.

Is NPS better than PPF?

NPS can earn more because part of it is in equity, and has an extra ₹50,000 deduction. PPF is guaranteed and fully tax-free but returns are lower.
