How the retirement corpus is calculated

Expenses at retirement = Today's expenses × (1 + inflation)^years to retire Corpus needed = present value of those expenses, rising with inflation, until your plan-until age Monthly SIP = SIP that grows to (Corpus − future value of current savings)

Example: a 30-year-old spending ₹50,000 a month today will need about ₹2.87 lakh a month at 60 (6% inflation). To fund that until 85 at 7% returns, the corpus needed is about ₹7.7 crore.

Tips for retirement planning

  • Start early. Ten extra years of compounding can halve the SIP you need.
  • Increase your SIP every year with your salary.
  • Keep health insurance separate from your corpus; medical costs rise faster than inflation.
  • Use EPF, PPF and NPS as part of the plan; they count towards your corpus.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 4% rule?

Withdrawing about 4% of your corpus in the first year and increasing it with inflation has historically lasted 30 years. In India, with higher inflation, many planners use 3–3.5%.

Should I include EPF in savings?

Yes. Add your EPF, PPF, NPS and other retirement savings under "Savings already invested".

What return should I assume?

Before retirement, 10–12% for an equity-heavy portfolio. After retirement, 6–8% for a safer mix.
