Each month a fixed amount is redeemed from your fund. The remaining balance stays invested and keeps earning returns. If returns exceed withdrawals, your corpus can last for life.
Example: ₹50 lakh with ₹30,000 a month withdrawn (7.2% a year) at 9% returns still has about ₹98.6 lakh left after 20 years, because returns outpace the withdrawals.
SWP from a debt or hybrid fund is often more tax-efficient, since only gains are taxed, not the whole withdrawal.
Balanced advantage, hybrid or debt funds are common choices because they are less volatile than pure equity.
Withdrawing during a fall sells more units, so keep 1–2 years of expenses in a safer fund to draw from.
