What a GST invoice must include

Under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, a tax invoice needs:

  • Your name, address and GSTIN
  • A unique invoice number (up to 16 characters, one series per financial year) and the date
  • Customer name and address, and their GSTIN if they are registered
  • Place of supply (state name and code) for inter-state sales
  • HSN code for goods or SAC code for services
  • Description, quantity, unit and value of each item, and any discount
  • Taxable value, GST rate, and tax amount split into CGST + SGST or IGST
  • Signature or digital signature of the supplier

This generator fills in the tax split for you. If your state and the place of supply match, it charges CGST + SGST. If they differ, it charges IGST. Type a GSTIN and the state is picked up from its first two digits.

Tax invoice or bill of supply?

Registered businesses charging GST issue a tax invoice. Businesses under the composition scheme, or selling only exempt goods, issue a bill of supply without GST. Untick "Charge GST" above to make one.
